Who needs to make plans for going out on the weekend when you can enjoy Netflix from the comfort of your home? Luckily, a streaming platform has lots to offer to keep you entertained for hours on end. While there are many trending series to watch, not everyone is ready to commit to several seasons and a long list of episodes.
Luckily, Netflix releases a handful of amazing original movies every year, and this year is no different. We can all spare around two hours for a good movie, so be prepared with an ample supply of popcorn and Fast Internet to stream like a dream.
Netflix has an intriguing lineup of star-studded movies for 2024. Here’s a sneak peek at what you can look forward to:
1. Players
First off is Players, coming out on the 14th of February, so of course it’s a rom-com. Netflix has given us a bunch of binge-worthy chick flicks in the past. So we have high expectations for this one – given that Tom Ellis plays one of the central characters.
The Lucifer fans are surely excited, but there’s more to look forward to. While Gina Rodriguez stars as the main protagonist, we also get to see Liza Koshy in a leading role. The storyline is not extraordinary, but the plot should be entertaining enough, given all the cool actors cast in the film.
2. Good Grief
Good Grief is a drama-comedy that has already been released at the start of 2024, so if you haven’t seen it yet, now’s the time. This movie has been written and directed by Dan Levy, who also plays the main protagonist in his story; and yes, it’s his debut as a producer.
Dan Levy is largely known as a comedian for his long-lasting role as ‘Leonard’ in The Big Bang Theory series. The plot of the movie revolves around a man coping with the loss of his husband, and then finding out that he was planning to leave him before the accidental death.
3. Irish Wish
If Lindsay Lohan’s comeback in the Netflix Christmas movie Falling for Christmas made your holidays merrier last year, you can look forward to some more happy time with Irish Wish. This Netflix original shall be released by the mid of March, so you won’t have to wait too long.
Movies about weddings and bridesmaids are a true and tried recipe for rom-coms, so you’ll have a good time if that’s the kind of stuff you live for. Hopefully, we’ll get more out of Lindsay in this one, aside from her looking flawless in a wedding dress.
4. Damsel
The upcoming Netflix original in the fantasy genre called Damsel has everyone excited because of ‘Millie Bobby Brown’. We are all aware that the British actress was impressive in her role as ‘Eleven’ in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. So let’s see how she portrays a badass princess.
The trailer for Damsel does remind of the Hulu original The Princess that came out in 2022, starring Joey King as the lead. There’s a handsome prince, a Royal family with evil motives, a fire-breathing dragon, and a princess who’ll beat the system despite all the odds – very fascinating and entertaining indeed!
5. Spaceman
If you think we don’t get enough science-fiction films lately, this one will certainly make your day. This movie is an adaptation of the renowned novel Spaceman of Bohemia. Netflix announced that it would be bringing the story to the big screen back in 2020.
Spaceman stars none other than Adam Sandler as the protagonist, and another noteworthy name among the cast is Kunal Nayyar. It’s a movie about an astronaut and intergalactic travel for a personal mission, which is bound to keep you ecstatic and mesmerized.
6. The Union
The Union is an action thriller coming to Netflix on the 16th of August. The star-studded cast includes Mark Wahlberg, J.K. Simmons, and Halle Berry, so the predictions are that it’s going to be a good one.
Mark will portray a pragmatic construction worker and Halle Berry his ex-girlfriend from high school, who will drag him into a world of secret agents and spies. The right amount of humor, a decent plot, and less-than-generic action sequences could make this movie memorable.
7. Mother of the Bride
Mother of the Bride is scheduled for release on the 9th of May this year, and it’s yet another Netflix rom-com to wait on. While the name of the film might not come across as captivating, the cast will surely change your mind.
Big names appearing in this movie include ‘Brooke Shields’, ‘Miranda Cosgrove’, and ‘Chad Michael Murray’. Mother of the Bride is being directed by the filmmaker behind movies like Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, i.e. Mark Waters, which sure is a plus point.
8. Monkey Man
Monkey Man is a movie about violence and revenge, which will be released on the 5th of April on Netflix. The main role will be portrayed by Dev Patel who began his acting career with the teen drama Skins and later met his breakthrough as the protagonist in the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
The story of Monkey Man is based on childhood trauma. A young boy dresses up as a gorilla at an underground fight club to make a living. There he is beaten badly each day by fighters, and that instils him with rage that only grows over time.
9. A Family Affair
Netflix may end the year with another smashing rom-com titled A Family Affair. The exact date of release has not been revealed yet, so it can be expected by the end of 2024. This one is going to be a hit among the younger audience because ‘Zac Efron’ and ‘Joey King’ will be seen together on screen.
It’s supposed to be a fun movie, though the plot is a bit controversial (but not original). It seems that the hero will fall for the heroine’s mother instead of her, so we wonder how that will pan out towards the end.
10. Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was released at the end of 2023, and its sequel is to be expected by the 19th of April 2024. The first movie was not exactly a success with a 22% score by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the general audience still liked it.
Part 2 Rebel Moon is not predicted to be sensational, but everyone who enjoyed the first movie is looking forward to it. Who knows, maybe the filmmakers will make this one count in the eyes of the critics.
